Veteran Dies In Air Mishap.
The death in a plane crash of 1st Lt. Edward C. Anthon, 28, Portland veteran of many months of aerial combat missions over enemy-held Europe, was announced Thursday at Marianna army air field, Florida, where recently he had been assigned as an instructor, following his return from the European theater of war. The announcement said the accident occurred about two miles northeast of Marianna during a routine training flight. No further details were given.
Lt. Anthon was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anthon, 2737 S. E. 50th Avenue. A graduate of the Richmond school and of Franklin high school he held a temporary appointment as a city fireman, stationed at the Lombard station, before entering the army air forces for cadet training early in 1942. He won his pilot's wings at Stockton Field, Cal., in January of 1943.
Combat Honors Won
The airman returned to the United States in September of this year after completing 71 combat missions with the 9th air force over Nazi-held territory as pilot of a B-26 Marauder bomber. He had been awarded the air medal and 12 oak leaf clusters and had been recommended for the distinguished flying cross in recognition of his achievement in crash-landing his crippled bomber in France.
In addition to the parents, Lt. Anthon leaves two sisters, Mrs. T. R. Hoke and Mrs. C. H. Westerlund, both of Portland.
